MerchantCircle Gets Paid

Months ago I had a status-report type chat with MerchantCircle, which is essentially a service for small and local businesses that helps them establish a Web presence, get optimized for search, and connect with other complementary companies. At the time I asked them how many paid customers they had. Thousands of "members" didn't mean much to me if they weren't generating revenue.

Recently, the company announced it's built its paid membership ranks to 5,000, and has around 525,000 members. The firm claims its paying customers have increased ten times over since December 2007.

The company also recently hooked up with Yahoo to promote Yahoo's products to its members, starting at the end of the summer. It's not clear what that will involve exactly.

Whether those paying members will renew or upgrade to a more premium offering, of course, will really determine the company's growth and sustainability. MerchantCircle is also up against countless offers from all sorts of services, including ones from well-known brands with entrenched local sales teams.

I connected to merchant circle. They called to say someone asked them if I was verified. I went through the verify process and only after I gave them 5 business contacts with emails did they shouw me that thee was a $35 fee to get verified and they put it into a shopping cart for me ready for checkout. They didn't show the cost up front. I feel ripped off.

I received that same phone call from merchant circle about being verified. Being a new business, I was not able to give them 5 businesses to verify me. However, I did proceed to the next page to find that they had a shopping cart ready to go. I did not purchase the package because I felt like it was a crock of shit.

I just got the same phone call. Thanks for not letting me even waste my time by going to to their website. Another sleazy business figuring out a way to rake in a fast buck and eventually going BK. That's OK, maybe the Feds can help them out when they go under by having the same people who got conned shell out more money.

“Merchant Circle” are scammers. They make false claims. They’ve listed my business incorrectly. They left a message that there was a video of my business on their site. Not! After many attempts to correct these people I find I cannot. They will not list the name of my business correctly. They don’t offer an e-mail, an address or phone number. It seems the only way is to register with them. Why would I want to register with a business that can’t even be bothered to list me correctly? They are damaging my business, not helping it.

I am the owner of Custom Mufflers in Douglasville Ga
I have been a Merchant Circle for about 6mo.
It is the greatest thing that has happen to my business in 17yrs. i am getting 1000 to 1500 hits a month. It is paying off. You do have to work the listing,by adding coupons, pictures, write a small blog and networking with other members.it is actually a lot of fun. i wont lie to you it did take me a litte time to learn the dashboard, but once you do,and see all the cool stuff you can do.
I feel guilty that i am not paying. There is so much i want to tell you about Merchant Circle and how great it is. also want to tell you about there partnership with search engines. I could go on and on. please e-mail with any question and give them a chance

I have to agree with Frank who wrote in on October 1. Merchant Circle annoyed me for months with robo-calls, saying that 'people were commenting on my site', and that there was a video of my business on it. Neither of these were true.
In one of the oddest developments, Merchant Circle, which had never been able to correctly list my business' name and had misplaced my business' site on their map by approx. .6 miles, moved my business' location to an area 9.9 miles away from its true location down a series of snaky gravel roads. Up until the time when they moved my business 10 miles away, I had not taken seriously just how much harm they could do.
While it is extremely strange that they do not have an e-mail address to connect 'unregistered' businesses to their website, for comment or information requests, I was very happy to find an address to write to (though their website does not make it easy). The address is 'Merchant Circle, 201 Main Street, Suite 100, Los Altos, CA 94022M.
I wrote to them 2 weeks ago asking that they correct the information that they displayed concerning my business or at least not display the map. Today I checked Merchant Circle and found that they have completely removed my business. I am relieved. Better no information than wrong information.

Thanks for the heads up folks. I'll try my luck going directly to websites like citysearch, local or NearbyThis.com

We registered one of our sites with Merchantcircle shortly after they began operations about 2 years ago. Our site , DestinDirect.com currently gets around 100,000 visitors per month and only about 10 to 15 of them are from Merchantcircle. We also get some odd, automated phone calls & emails form them and most of the links etc in the emails don't work.

MerchantCircle has definitely become a player in the online industry.
