Oreo Takes Big Budget Baby Step in Social Media

Oreo has tapped star power to promote its new Golden Double Stuf cookie.

In a homepage video ad that appears today on YouTube, Donald Trump challenges Eli and Peyton Manning to participate in a "lick race" competition to buy the so-called DSRL or the Double Stuf Racing League.

The YouTube video includes a promotion pointing Oreo fans to follow the brand on Facebook and Twitter and visit a YouTube channel or microsite for the Double Stuf Racing League. The campaign also includes a sweepstakes to meet the Mannings in Florida.

Will using celebrities like Trump and the Manning brothers help a social media campaign? Perhaps. To me, though, it feels like Oreo -- which has a huge following on Facebook -- is trying a little too hard to stuff its brand into social media channels.

I was just on the Oreo Facebook Fan page and it's really plain at best. It seems that whoever is in charge is missing out a unique opportunity to connect with fans and interact with people, creating brand loyalty. Where are the videos and cool widgets and apps Oreo?

Back in May, the Oreo fan page was run entirely by fans with no involvement from Oreo.

It's not clear how involved Oreo is in this page today, even though you have to figure the brand is more involved because the fan page exists under www.facebook.com/oreo.

Well at least they are trying and doing something much better than most other companies. Maybe they do not get it right the first time but they are trying. That is what baby steps is all about.

Also don't forget how motivation works. They are going from not doing anything to paying attention to their fans. I am sure the fans like that Oreo try to give them something back.
